Sports Eye Safety

Sports Eye Safety with Our Somerset Optometrist

Sports are great for your body in so many ways. However, they do pose a risk to your eyes, much of which can be eliminated by wearing the proper protective eyewear. Sports glasses or goggles are effective at preventing up to 90% of eye injuries that might otherwise occur while playing a given sport. Playing sports with the proper eyewear prescribed by our Somerset optometrist at Franklin Family Eyecare will both improve your performance and protect your eyes.

Sports Vision Hazards

The most dangerous sports for your eyes are those that involve rapidly-moving projectiles such as balls. Paintball, racquetball, tennis, basketball, soccer, and golf are classified as high- or moderate-risk sports. Sports that are low-risk or safe from a sports vision standpoint include track and field, swimming, gymnastics, and cycling.

A few sports do require that you wear protective eyewear, but for the most part, it is left up to the participant. For this reason, it is important that you be conscious of when sports may be hazardous to your eyes. If your child participates in a sport, make sure they are wearing appropriate eye protection, as well.

Protective Sports Glasses and Goggles

Everyone can wear protective eyeglasses or goggles. Non-prescription glasses and goggles are available for people who do not need vision correction, and prescription options are available for people who do. Protective eyewear should be made from polycarbonate, which is much stronger and harder to break than the typical plastics used in glasses. You need an eye exam from our optometry practice in order to purchase prescription eye protection, just like you do for other glasses.

In addition to providing protection from injuries, sunglasses designed for athletes that block 99-100 percent of UV rays will protect your eyes from damage caused by the sun. Everyone participating in an outdoor sport should wear protective sunglasses, and all protective eyewear, whether they are sunglasses or not, should meet American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) standards.
