Myopia Control with Our Somerset Optometrist

Somerset optometrist Dr. Josephine Ngong-Tawe and the rest of the team here at Franklin Family Eyecare are always looking for innovative, effective, and best-practice diagnostic and therapeutic services to help people with vision and eye conditions. Myopia is one of the most common vision disorders that is believed to affect as many as 1/3 of all Americans (including men, women, and children).

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a type of refractive error that makes it difficult to see things that are far away. A person with myopia is said to be nearsighted, meaning that they can see close objects clearly but not distant objects.

Myopia typically occurs because a person's eyeballs have grown too "long" (that is, the distance from front to back of the eye is greater than normal). If the eye is too long, light entering the eye will not focus on the retina as it should, but instead at a point somewhere ahead of it.

Myopia may also be caused abnormalities of the cornea (too curved) or lens (too thick), or even as a combination of all three structures.

What is Myopia Control?

Myopia can't be cured yet, but fortunately, there are several ways to slow the progression of the condition and accommodate for the abnormal eye shape that is leading to a person's blurry vision and other symptoms:

  • Atropine eye drops (which dilate the pupils and temporarily relax the eye's focusing method)
  • Multi-focal contact lenses or glasses (different sections of the lens have different prescription strengths to help your eye focus at different distances)
  • Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K (specialized lenses are worn at night to temporarily reshape the corneas to improve the way light focuses in the eye)

Our team here at Franklin Family Eyecare can work closely with you or your loved one to determine the most appropriate treatment for you. We'll also encourage you to visit our eye doctor on a routine basis so we can adjust your treatment as necessary to ensure that your eyesight remains as clear as possible throughout every stage of life.
