Our Somerset Optometrist Discusses Macular Degeneration Symptoms
One condition affecting nearly a quarter of Americans between 65 and 74 is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Our Somerset optometrist notes that it's the top cause of legal blindness and severe loss of vision for U.S. residents older than 60. Understanding macular degeneration symptoms can help individuals in Somerset, Franklin Township, Hillsborough Township, Bound Brook, and surrounding communities seek a diagnosis and the best vision care.
Our Eye Doctor Explains the Two Types of AMD
More than 200,000 patients who see an eye doctor each year have one of two types of AMD: wet or dry. Both affect the macula portion of the retina, resulting in distortion.
Most AMD originates as the dry type. In as many as 20 percent of patients with dry AMD, the condition advances to the wet form. This vision condition doesn't always progress at the same speed in each eye. Some patients have the dry type in one eye and the wet in the other.
Our optometrist in Somerset notes that the hallmark of AMD is a loss of central vision that occurs gradually. Each type of this eye problem has distinctive symptoms.
Dry AMD symptoms include hazy vision, loss of brightness of colors, blurred print while reading, requiring additional light to do close work, and a blurred spot that is in the center of the visual field and that might eventually enlarge and appear darker.
Wet AMD patients might experience straight lines that now look wavy, a surprise blind spot, objects that appear smaller than normal or farther away, or a noticeable reduction of their central vision.
Since severe AMD can result in becoming legally blind, our optometrist in Somerset recommends a vision exam for anyone with any of its symptoms.
