3 Smart Reasons to Schedule Your Yearly Eye Exam

Yearly eye exams allow your optometrist to note developing structural abnormalities or vision changes that require prompt treatment. Acquiring early treatment for the conditions affecting your eyes gives you the best chance at a full recovery. If you have not scheduled your eye exam yet, you will want to fit it in before the end of the year. Otherwise, you may prolong the length of time between exams, which can allow developing problems to progress and remain untreated.

Vision Changes

Although your vision may naturally worsen as you age, sudden decreases in your visual capabilities may indicate a serious health condition. Blurred, clouded or spotted vision may relate back to ocular migraines, retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular holes or stroke. Your optometrist will use the results of your vision test as a tool in evaluating your overall health.

Anatomy Alterations

Another tool used for the evaluation process is the comprehensive visual inspection of the structures in your eye, including the cornea and retina. Thyroid malfunction, diabetes, hypertension and Cushing's syndrome all spur changes in the ocular system. Your eye doctors will note these changes during the eye exam and suggest further tests to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.

Benefit Allowance

Your medical insurance benefits may allow for one eye exam each year. These benefits do not rollover to the next year, so if you do not use it, you will lose it. If you pay into a health savings plan, you may also face the chance of losing your allowed eye exam funds. Schedule your eye exam before the end of the year to make the most of your vision coverage benefits.
