Senior Eye Exams

Senior Vision and Eye Exam Recommendations from our Somerset Optometrist

A routine eye exam is an important part of preventative health care for people of any age, but it is especially crucial for seniors. As your eyes age, you are likely to develop more troublesome changes in your vision. We also are at greater risk of eye conditions that have no obvious initital symptoms. A visit to our Somerset optometrist at Franklin Family Eyecare, Dr. Ngong-Tawe, will help you keep your eyes as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

Age-Related Vision Conditions

Some diseases are seen almost exclusively in older people, such as age related macular degeneration. Other diseases become more common as people age:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic retinopathy

All of these conditions can severely affect vision if left untreated. Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy can both affect your eyes before you have any symptoms, which is one reason why it is so important to stay up-to-date with your senior eye care.

Not all changes to your vision as you age are necessarily harmful, however. All aging eyes find it harder to focus close-up, which is why older adults may need reading glasses when they did not before. All aging eyes also need more light to see as well, which might be the reason that you find it harder to read with the same lamp that you have had for twenty years.

If you experience any changes in your vision, it is important to contact our optometry clinic and make an appointment. A thorough eye exam can diagnose a minor issue such as needing a new prescription or a more serious condition, such as age related macular degeneration.

How an Optometrist Can Help

Diagnosis is not the only way that an optometrist can help. Treatment for conditions such as glaucoma can be as simple as medicated eye drops. However, going without that simple treatment can lead to permanent vision loss. Some eye conditions may require more aggressive treatment, such as laser procedures to seal leaking blood vessels in patients with advanced age related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.

Taking a little time to get regular eye exams and manage any vision conditions that you already have can pay off in the future. In many cases, vision that is lost cannot be restored, but your current vision can be protected.
