You only get one pair of eyes, so it is critical that you take the proper steps to help ensure a lifetime of clear vision. Here at Franklin Family Eyecare, we want to help you safeguard your whole family's eye health and visual acuity. That's why our New Jersey optometry team, under the leadership of Dr. Josephine Ngong-Tawe, offers a wide range of eye and vision exams to identify potential problems in their earliest possible stages, at any stage of life.
Many eye diseases can lurk for years without giving you any notice of their presence, growing increasingly more severe until permanent vision loss results. even when an eye disorder is irreversible, modern treatment methods can help put the brakes on its further advancement. For this reason, our optometrists recommend a yearly eye exam for most individuals, and twice-yearly exams for individuals at special risk, such as those suffering from diabetes.
Eye care needs may vary from one age group to the next. Our optometrists are aware of these specialized needs and can look for particular age-related problems accordingly. Examples include:
Children - Children require the best possible eye function from the earliest possible age because the brain and eyes have to learn how to process information together. We check for lazy eye, convergence problems, eye misalignment and other abnormalities so they can be corrected early in life. By employing a kind of eye chart known as a "tumbling E" chart, we can even identify refractive errors in children too young to know the letters of the alphabet, enabling us to prescribe corrective lenses even at this age.
Adolescents - Refractive errors that cause nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can cause serious problems for school-age kids, from eye strain and headaches to academic challenges. We pay close attention to visual acuity testing during this phase to make sure your child gets a prescription for corrective lenses if needed. Teenagers who are inexperienced at applying cosmetics may give themselves eye infections and other acute problems that require medical attention. Students who play contact sports may require extra-strong protective eyewear.
Seniors - Aging eyes become increasingly prone to certain eye diseases, including cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, as well as a lens focus issue called presbyopia. We can examine the retina to look for signs of retinal diseases, as well as checking the front of the eye for the presence of cataracts. Pressure testing can reveal glaucoma in its early stages. Presbyopia can be corrected with multifocal or progressive lenses.
